The worst part of addiction is usually that rock-bottom moment when a person realizes that they have a choice: get help or lose everything. For Dustin, an alumnus from our Phoenix House Academy of San Diego, that moment came at the young age of 14.
“I violated my probation; I had a dirty drug test. I was still using cocaine and heroin, my drugs of choice—both the upper and the downer. When I failed that drug test on probation, it was my rock bottom. I thought, ‘This is it, I’m going away for a long time.’ I just didn’t know where I would have to go. At that moment my whole world kind of stopped.
Needless to say, I ended up with a choice: rehab or juvenile hall. Get clean, or get locked up. I was 14 years old, and at that point in my life, I finally thought, ‘You know, I’m just done using drugs. I actually want to get clean.’ And I meant it.”
