The Prevention Department at Phoenix House Academy in Los Angeles is actively engaged in a campaign developed by the Drug Free Alliance called “Parents Who Host, Lose the Most.” This campaign focuses on the health risks associated with underage drinking and the legal consequences of providing alcohol to teens.
In April and May 2014, the Prevention Department recruited and mobilized supporters through a variety of means including: conducting community presentations, attending community meetings, and distributing flyers, signs, and posters in Arleta and Pacoima.
The “Parents Who Host, Lose the Most” campaign provides adults with strategies on how to host teen-friendly parties without alcohol, tobacco, or illegal drugs, but with lots of fun.
Safe strategies include:
• Alcohol-free activities
• Being home when your teenager has a party
• Making sure your teenager’s friends do not bring alcohol into your home
• Talking with other parents
• Reporting underage drinking
The Prevention Department’s efforts have reached over 1,000 people in Pacoima and Arleta through prevention activities hosted at a range of community locations, such as parent centers, schools, clinics, dental offices, libraries, and recreational centers. The following agencies have partnered with us to help promote the campaign: Volunteers of America, Youth Institute Policy, early education centers, Pacoima Middle school, Pacoima Charter School, Bert Corona Charter School, and recreational parks.
The activities of Phoenix House’s Prevention Department are made possible by funds from the County of Los Angeles, Department of Public Health, Substance Abuse Prevention and Control.
