Last summer, a group of Phoenix House Academy of Westchester clients, assisted by professionals from the Horticultural Society of New York and the NYC Department of Education, designed a garden in the Academy’s courtyard. Using visions inspired by nature as well as their own experiences in city parks, our clients created a unique outdoor space with trees, pathways, gardens, a patio and pergola, a pond, and even a green roof feature on the outer arcade. These clients’ designs will become a reality as we create the Hoving Family Cloister Garden in memory of Tom Hoving and in honor of Nancy Hoving’s four decades of commitment and leadership at Phoenix House.
The young men and women at the Phoenix House Academy of Westchester come from across New York State, from lives damaged by drugs or alcohol. Phoenix House offers them residential treatment, full-time schooling, and the tools they need to establish productive, healthy lifestyles.
The expansive 16,000-square-foot garden will be used for classes, groups, recreation, and quiet reflection. Phoenix House clients will work with master gardeners, skilled craftsmen and teams of volunteers from New York City and Westchester County to create this dynamic and ever-changing space where students can learn, reflect, and advance their recovery. The Phoenix House Academy of Westchester will also partner with the Horticultural Society of New York to launch an ongoing plant cultivation program, complete with a year-round curriculum guided by a certified Horticultural Therapist. In addition to the Academy’s existing carpentry and electrical training initiatives, the Horticulture Program will provide an opportunity for clients to learn marketable vocational skills such as garden maintenance and landscaping.
With many attractive gift recognition opportunities, we aim to garner philanthropic support to meet the projected costs of labor, materials, plantings, and the green roof component. The Hoving Family Cloister Garden will make an incredible difference in the lives of adolescents at the Phoenix House Academy for years to come, helping them to grow mentally, socially, emotionally, and academically.
