At Phoenix House, we are deeply thankful for all the sacrifices our veterans have made, especially those who have had multiple deployments in the ongoing conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Recognizing the unique challenges they face when they return home, we have provided dedicated substance abuse and mental health services for individuals who have served in the military. Through our Military Services Program, we offer a veterans-specific continuum of care that includes residential treatment and outpatient services with a strong focus on addressing not only substance abuse and addiction, but also any co-occurring disorders, including depression and PTSD.
For many veterans, the transition back to civilian life can be extremely challenging. As a result of the trauma they have experienced during their deployments, many have difficulty maintaining family relationships and returning to the day-to-day activities they once enjoyed. The use of alcohol and drugs may be a convenient means of masking uncomfortable or painful feelings. At Phoenix House, we are all aware that returning veterans are showing higher levels of PTSD, mental health issues, and substance abuse, but are less likely to be screened for problems or provided with appropriate care.
Phoenix House has seen its Military Services Program population increase since the beginning of 2011, and we anticipate greater numbers of both male and female veterans in our program as a result of the withdrawal of troops from Iraq at the end of the year. Nationally, Phoenix House is committed to expanding our capacity to serve the veteran population as the need for services increases.
On Veterans Day, we paused to recognize the service these men and women perform for all of us. As the holidays approach, we ask that you pause once again, to be grateful for all we have in our great nation and to recognize those who protect our freedom. When you give to our Military Services Program, you make it possible for us to help the veterans in our care rebuild their lives. This Thanksgiving, we can all give thanks to our returning veterans by supporting the Phoenix House Military Services Program with a donation. With your support, we can continue to offer the comprehensive care these veterans all deserve.
