John Hazen White, JrPhoenix Houses of New England will host its twelfth annual Public Service Award Luncheon on Wednesday, June 20, 2012, at noon at The Westin Providence.  John Hazen White, Jr., CEO & President, Taco, Inc. will be honored at the event for his outstanding leadership and contributions to the community.

John Hazen White, Jr., is one of the most prominent business leaders in Rhode Island.  As president of Taco, Inc., located in Cranston, he runs a $200 million manufacturing company that is a leader in its industry.  John represents the third generation of his family to own and operate Taco, which was started by his grandfather, Elwood White, after World War I.  John’s father, John Hazen White, Sr., ran Taco for more than 50 years and built it into the quality brand it is today.  John took over the company upon his father’s retirement in the mid-1990s.  The White family has long been known for its philanthropic activities, and John continues a tradition of civic involvement and activism. He is a visiting professor at Johnson & Wales University, as well as a member of its corporation and a trustee. He is a trustee of Wheaton College and the Williston Northampton School. Past board involvements have included the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce, Center for Performance Excellence, the Rhode Island Economic Policy Council, the Van Liew Trust Company, Providence Public Library, the Rhode Island Philharmonic, and Women & Infants Hospital.

Like his father before him, John is deeply committed to education, the arts, and the improvement of Rhode Island’s business and political climate. He was a founding member of the Manufacturing Summit, a nonpartisan coalition of Rhode Island manufacturing and business interests that worked to improve manufacturing in the Ocean State. His involvement as host of Lookout, his previous public affairs television program, and current bi-weekly column published in several local newspapers across the state, and focusing on issues of concern to all Rhode Islanders, stems directly from his commitment to changing Rhode Island for the better.
