Even a chilly and rainy Saturday morning could not dampen the spirits of some very hardy Rhode Islanders who turned out to participate in the sixth annual Phoenix House Run! Walk! Ride!—For the Health of It! Held at Phoenix House Exeter Center on Saturday, April 26, with generous sponsorship from W.B. Mason, MetLife, Nation Wide Construction, Ursillo, Teitz & Ritch, Ltd., and AdCare Hospital of Worcester, the fundraiser featured a 5K (3.1-mile) run, a 3K (1.8-mile) walk, and a 20-mile bike rally through southeastern Rhode Island. While the weather was less than perfect, participants enjoyed a range of indoor and outdoor activities. Fit for Recovery!, a health and wellness fair, featured demonstrations of yoga for adults and children, free information on substance abuse screening and treatment, overdose prevention with Naloxone (Narcan), smoking cessation, adoption and foster care, and many other topics, including assistance with signing up for health insurance. More fun was provided by face-painting for the little ones, a raffle and silent auction with great prizes, and each participant went home with an event T-shirt and a pair of stylish sunglasses, generously donated by FGX International. Following the morning’s exertions, everyone enjoyed an old-fashioned barbecue lunch, with all the makings donated by Stop and Shop, and some great live music by The Recovery All Stars.
But in addition to the fun, exercise, and camaraderie, Run! Walk! Ride! served an important purpose: all funds raised through the event support Phoenix House’s substance abuse treatment programs throughout Rhode Island. Ranging from medically-monitored detoxification, through gender-specific residential treatment for men and women, residential treatment with academic tutoring for teens, outpatient services at three locations statewide, and recovery housing for those in the early stages of sobriety, Phoenix House Rhode Island provides a full range of addiction treatment services, all delivered with respect and compassion.
