Our young residents at Phoenix House Academy of Los Angeles were active during the month of September to help commemorate National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month.
On September 16, our teen residents gathered for their 5th Annual Recovery Month Celebration where members from the community chose the winning team in the month-long poster competition based on the theme, “Join the Voices for Recovery: Now More Than Ever!” Winners were chosen based on the quality of the posters and their presentations about the community service projects they’ve engaged in as part of Phoenix House’s treatment program.
On September 22, nine young residents took part in a panel discussion co-sponsored by the Sylmar Neighborhood Partnership and the Drug Prevention/Intervention Coalition of Sylmar High School. The evening was designed to educate and inform about pathways to drug use, benefits of treatment, and symptoms and preventive measures that could be taken by families and communities. The life stories our young residents recounted were moving and made an enormous impact on the audience of over 100 parents, teachers, and students at Sylmar High School.
And, on the evening of September 23, 16 of the youth at Phoenix House along with parents and staff took a field trip to Dodger Stadium, where the Dodgers provided special seats for those in treatment in commemoration of Recovery Month – a great evening for all!
