Exercise and healthy eating can contribute greatly to the well-being of teens in treatment for substance use

At Phoenix House Florida, our philosophy is that a healthy mind plus a healthy body equals a healthy recovery.  During the month of October, this was a primary focus at Tampa’s Derek Jeter Center at Phoenix House. All through the month, we offered an Adolescent Social Skills group with a “Say No to Drugs” focus, which allowed group members to enter a nutrition and exercise challenge. The participants were encouraged to be “fearless, inspiring, and triumphant.”

Many of the topics addressed focused on educating the young clients on substance abuse, malnutrition, and illnesses connected to addiction, while at the same time stressing healthy eating habits, exercise, and proper nutrition. Along with this challenge came the rewards of better physical health and friendly competition. In the beginning, members were given folders with a four-week log to aid them in tracking their food intake. Clients brought their completed weekly logs to meetings, and their physical changes were recorded to track their progress. At the end of the four weeks, trophies were awarded to first-, second-, and third-place winners, based on their successful completion of the program and their improved physical health.

At Phoenix House Florida, we provide evidence-based treatment and services to individuals suffering from the effects of addiction and co-occurring mental health issues. The Derek Jeter Center at Phoenix House provides outpatient services to teens and adults, while Phoenix House Outpatient Services in Brandon provides similar treatment for both age groups.  For adult men and women requiring residential treatment, Phoenix House Citra Center provides gender-specific services in a safe and supportive environment. We pride ourselves on offering these services with professionalism and respect for each individual in our care.  One of our primary goals is to inspire and support the youth in our programs to live healthy lives, free from drug and alcohol addiction.

If you or a loved one are struggling with the effects of addiction, please call us at 1 888 671 9392.  A healthier life is just a phone call away!
