Phoenix Houses of the Mid-Atlantic was awarded a new contract by the District of Columbia, Child and Family Services Agency (CFSA) to provide in-patient substance abuse treatment for female clients and up to four of their children for a period of up to four months. This contract will help support and improve the Demeter House program which is designed to treat women who struggle with addiction and their children.
The Child and Family Services (CFSA) is the public child welfare agency in the District of Columbia responsible for protecting child victims and those at risk for abuse and neglect and assisting their families. The agency works to ensure that children involved in the public child welfare system grow up in safe, permanent homes with strong families.
As substance abuse is one of the main challenges for youth and families Demeter House provides services designed to meet the needs of women and mothers. Through structured daily counseling and addiction education groups such as Women’s Issues Group, Parenting Group, and Seeking Safety, a group designed to help individuals suffering from both addiction and trauma, mothers can focus on their recovery while learning parenting skills. While mothers are in treatment, children go to school off-site or are cared for on-site by qualified childcare professionals. Mother/child relationships in this way are preserved, and this helps motivate mothers toward recovery.
Evidence-based practices and client incentives are constantly being discussed, and introduced in the program to ensure that we reach our goal of having sober and happy individuals. Renovations in the building are frequently made in order to create at Demeter a home-like environment where our clients can feel comfortable and that aids them in their recovery process.
