National Recovery Month!

In celebration of National Recovery Month, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA) released its 2011 National Survey on Drug Use and Health on Monday, September 24, 2012, with a news conference at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.  Gil Kerlikowske, the White House Drug Czar, took part in the discussion which featured agency officials, experts in drug abuse and recovery, and several individuals who are currently in recovery after seeking drug treatment.

Phoenix House Alum Jared Hamre was a featured speaker (Jared Hamre on C-SPAN – YouTube) at the news conference.  Jared frequently speaks at recovery events and schools throughout the community and is a volunteer for Massachusetts Organization for Addiction Recovery (MOAR) and currently serves on the Phoenix House Western Massachusetts Community Advisory Board.

According to SAMHSA, “The annual survey is the largest of its kind and is the government’s primary vehicle for determining how many persons are using illegal drugs, alcohol, and tobacco, as well as how many are misusing pharmaceuticals.”  SAMSHA is an agency within the Department of Health and Human Services with a mission to reduce the impact of drug use nationwide.
