Phoenix House Academies in Texas Teach “I C.A.N.”

Phoenix House Academy in Austin female clientPhoenix House Texas is doing something new in adolescent treatment and it involves letting our clients know that they “C.A.N.” This is achieved through our I C.A.N. model, which allows our Master’s Level Clinicians to truly individualize each client’s treatment with the goal to enable true life change. The model includes Person Centered Therapy, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, as well as Reality Therapy. Each of the four stages – investigate strengths, consider possible selves, acquire the necessary skills, and nurture hope – direct focus on each client’s individual needs and allows the clinician, along with the rest of the treatment team, to help the client remain focused on their specific goals.

While the fundamental structure and approach of the I C.A.N. model are specified and broken down into four transitional stages, the amount of time each client remains in each stage is the variable. Many of our clients may share similarities, but individual needs still vary. The model is built in such a way that it cycles through themes throughout each client’s stay, rather than walking linearly through treatment. The primary benefit is that the focus can then be shifted away from the end goal of a discharge, and instead toward successful, long-term recovery.

“I C.A.N., with it’s grounding in strengths based and positive psychology principles, provides a framework for real transformation. We’re actually meeting the teenage brain development where it’s at. It’s really having a significant impact,” says Jack M. Feinberg, Vice President & Clinical Director.

This new structure along with our recovery-focused direct care staff and commitment to assisting the entire family unit in healing allow the Phoenix House Academies in Texas to stand above the rest. In Texas we offer Residential Programming with DISD/AISD credit recovery services for male and female adolescents between the ages of 13 and 17. Just as everyone has an individual story, we provide truly individualized treatment.
