Today, the Grammy Foundation / MusiCares and the National Institute of Drug Abuse announced the winners of their national teen songwriting contest, including Phoenix House Academy’s own Vera Marquardt, whose original song, “Take it to the Days,” received third place. Two other gifted Phoenix House residents and aspiring songwriters, Lauren Vollaire and Jasmine Copeland, were runners up. The contest requested submissions of original songs to raise substance abuse awareness through music, and the talented teens of our Phoenix Rising Music Program were thrilled to work with John Morabito, Music Director at Phoenix House Academy of Lake View Terrace, in order to create their compositions.
The Phoenix Rising Music Program has been generously supported by singer-song writer Kara DioGuardi, who has helped create music studios at at the Phoenix Academies of Los Angeles and New York, and soon at our Austin Academy and Citra center. The program has also received donations from the DJ AM Memorial Fund, which was created in memory of Adam Goldstein and his commitment to helping others struggling with addiction.
Vera’s inspirational song will be posted on: the MusiCares and GRAMMY Foundation’s GRAMMY 365 Web site, the premiere site for Recording Academy members; and the Think MTV Web site, MTV’s Web site for young people who want to improve their life, their community and their world. It will also be posted on the Above the Influence Campaign site, sponsored by the National Youth Anti-Drug Media Campaign, a program of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. All three winners will have the opportunity to attend the 53rd annual GRAMMY Awards backstage experience in January 2011 in Los Angeles. They will also receive a certificate from the National Institute on Drug Abuse acknowledging their role in the dissemination of health information about substance abuse.
We are so proud of Vera, Lauren, Jasmine and the rest of our young clients in recovery who channel their experiences and emotions into the healing medium of music. You can listen to Vera’s song by clicking here.
