Phoenix House Mid-Atlantic (PHMA) welcomes Susan L. Cherney, M.S. as Regional Director of Development.

Susan joins our staff with leadership expertise in development and fundraising; moves management; donor relations and stewardship; strategic fundraising initiatives; project management and execution; and revenue generation through multiple contributed revenue streams – foundations, major and intermediate gifts, special events, corporate sponsorships and partnerships, third party events and workplace giving.

Susan brings more than 25 years of success in building new infrastructure and restructure for higher levels of diverse revenue generation and operational performance in both non-profit and private sector environments. She comes to PHMA from the Alzheimer’s Association where she served in several capacities for the past ten years at both the national office and the National Capital Area Chapter – consultant; Chief Development Officer; Director, National Galas Program; and Vice President, Development.

“I am honored to be part of the PHMA team to help raise funds to support the remarkable work of the organization. We are saving lives here and there is nothing more important than that” said Cherney.

Raised and educated in Arlington, VA, she returned home from San Francisco to Arlington 13 years ago. Non-profit, development and building donor relationships is her passion; “…because through this work, Cherney said, I can help make a meaningful difference in lives, families, communities and help heal where healing is needed.”

Susan has master’s degrees in both Communications and Counseling Psychology. Susan is married, the mother of two grown daughters and a first-time grandmother to the newest light of her life, her grandson, Griff.
