Here at Phoenix House Mid-Atlantic, we strive to empower young people with the message that they don’t need to turn to drugs to get high. Healthy activities like surfing, singing, painting, and basketball also get those dopamine receptors dancing and serotonin singing! There are countless ways to get a natural “high,” and Phoenix House Mid-Atlantic partnered with Natural High to spread the word at local middle and high schools during Red Ribbon Week.
Natural High is a nonprofit substance abuse prevention organization that inspires young people to say yes to their passions and no to drugs and alcohol. The group’s digital platform includes programs for youth, educators, and parents in all 50 states. Its research-based curriculum features more than 40 influential drug-free celebrity supporters—such as soccer’s U.S. Men’s National Team goalkeeper Tim Howard, world champion gymnast Jordyn Wieber, The Voice winner Cassadee Pope, professional surfer Rob Machado, and the Grammy Award-winning musicians of Switchfoot—who believe in the power of the next generation and the ability to change culture and save lives. These celebrity role models work with Natural High to engage young people in dialogue about their passions in order to encourage a generation to say yes to a natural high and no to drugs.
Inspired by this important work, Phoenix House Mid-Atlantic used a unique approach for teaching drug awareness by kicking off Red Ribbon Week with a Natural High Poster Campaign that asked students from area schools, “What is your natural high?” We had such a tremendous response to the campaign that it was a daunting task to select the winners!
We look forward to many more opportunities to partner with Natural High and advance our mutual goal of guiding youth toward healthy, fulfilling, and substance-free lives.
