Phoenix House Massachusetts Hosts Run and Walk Event

Monday, September 30th, 2013

A warm, sunny Saturday in early autumn. . . lush green surroundings. . . healthy, invigorating exercise. . . a great barbecue lunch. . . upbeat live music. . . an exciting raffle. . .  Sometimes everything comes together to make the perfect event, and that’s what happened on Saturday, September 14, as Phoenix House Western Massachusetts inaugurated Phoenix House Runs and Walks—For the Health of It!  In a fundraiser that is sure to become an annual tradition, Phoenix House staff, clients, families, friends, kids, and dogs gathered in Springfield’s beautiful Forest Park to show their support for Phoenix House’s work to provide substance abuse treatment, education, and prevention in the Pioneer Valley region.

Choosing between a 5K run and a 3K walk, participants hit the trails of Forest Park and returned ready for hot dogs and hamburgers hot off the grill, with ingredients generously donated by Thurston Foods and AC’s Main Street Market.  Many of the walkers and runners were sponsored by friends and family members, increasing support for Phoenix House.

The music, performed by local recovery band T.I.M.E inside the Futurliner, an antique bus donated for the occasion by Peter Pan Bus Lines, even drew some local residents who happened to be enjoying the park that day.  The increased visibility for Phoenix House and awareness of services offered will no doubt prove beneficial for all.

At the end of the day, as tired volunteers, walkers, and runners cleaned up the site and headed for home, the sentiment expressed was unanimous: “We can’t wait to do this again next year!”
