The Rhode Island Council on Alcoholism and Other Drug Dependence (RICAODD), a Phoenix House Program, presented the 46th Annual Community Service Awards on Saturday, May 21, at the Phoenix House Exeter Campus in Rhode Island. The award presentation was an exciting component of the Opening Ceremonies of Phoenix House Runs and Walks!, an exhilarating celebration of life and health, held each year in support of our programs in Rhode Island.
The Rhode Island Council’s Community Service Awards honor outstanding individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the Council’s work and to the field of substance abuse treatment. All of this year’s awardees support prevention and treatment of alcoholism and other substance misuse, and have demonstrated exceptional commitment to the health and well-being of Rhode Islanders.
The Honorable M. Teresa Paiva Weed, President, Rhode Island Senate, and The Honorable Nicholas Mattiello, Speaker of the House were honored as Legislator of the Year for continued dedication to recovery and treatment efforts in our state. Colonel Steven G. O’Donnell, Superintendent, Rhode Island State Police received the Chairman’s Award for exceptional and lifesaving leadership in making the overdose reversal drug, Narcan, available to all State Police officers. David Spencer, Executive Director, was awarded the Bronze Key for outstanding contributions to the field of substance use treatment and recovery. E. Stefan Coutoulakis, received the Community Service Award for exceptional leadership and outstanding contributions to the health and well-being of all Rhode Islanders. Osvaldo Monteiro, Stop & Shop was honored with the Appreciation Award for outstanding statewide contributions to Phoenix House’s mission in support of individuals in recovery.
Generously underwritten by Ursillo, Teitz & Ritch, Ltd., W.B. Mason, Stop & Shop, FGX International, PrintCraft, Cool Air Creations, NBC 10, and The Sentinel Group, Phoenix House Runs and Walks! raised much-needed funds in support of Phoenix House Rhode Island’s work to save lives from the opioid addiction epidemic. All of the day’s participants and sponsors responded generously to our reminder: “Every step you take. . . saves a life!”
