Phoenix House heroes receive Proclamation Award from the City of New York

Friday, December 16th, 2011

Trecia Beckford and Kevin Stephenson, staff members of Phoenix House Springfield Gardens Mental Health Community Residence, were honored by the New York City Council at a special Proclamation Award ceremony on December 8th in Manhattan.

Council Member James Sanders, Jr. and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn welcomed Trecia and Kevin, along with Phoenix House Springfield Gardens Community Residence Director Cynthia Shepard, Phoenix Houses of New York Senior Vice President, Regional Director Traci Donnelly, and Phoenix House President and CEO Howard Meitiner.

Their brave act occurred in August, when a minibus overturned after colliding with another vehicle on Springfield Boulevard, near their facility. Trecia and Kevin heard a loud boom, dashed outside to help rescue three preschool children, dangling inside the bus from their seat belts – giving no thought to their own safety. Their quick thinking helped guide the children to aid and comfort until they were transported to a local hospital with the bus’ driver and matron.

We are truly proud of Trecia and Kevin for their courageous call to action and the samaritanism they displayed that day. Our staff is always on the watch, paying special attention to our friends and neighbors in the community.
