On Wednesday, March 21, 2012, Peter DalPra, Program Director, Phoenix House Franklin Center; Jacqui Abikoff and Patricia Tucker, both members of Franklin Center’s Community Advisory Board; and Catherine Iacuzzi, a grant writer often consulted by Phoenix House, attended a weekly coffee reception hosted by Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH). After the reception, members of Senator Shaheen’s staff met with the Phoenix House delegation to discuss a number of important issues. These included support for the Federal Block Grant and the Affordable Care Act to ensure substance abuse treatment for those most in need. They also discussed the need for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to provide trained substance abuse professionals to treat veterans and their families. Another topic discussed was the devastating consequence of the prescription drug epidemic in New Hampshire.
The Franklin group was in Washington to attend Advocacy in Action, the annual conference of NAADAC (National Association of Addiction Professionals). They all are members of NAADAC’s New Hampshire affiliate. Catherine Iacuzzi serves as President, Peter DalPra as President-Elect, and Jacqui Abikoff as Secretary. All four serve as co-chairs of the organization’s Public Policy Committee. While in Washington they were also able to meet with other members of New Hampshire’s Congressional Delegation: Representatives Charles Bass (R-NH) and Frank Guinta (R-NH), and their staffs, as well as representatives from Senator Kelly Ayotte’s (R-NH) office
