The clients of Phoenix House Delaware County Center are tireless volunteers in the relief effort in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene’s storm and flash floods which devastated the Delaware County villages of Prattsville, Margaretville, Fleischmanns, and many others. Since the flood, the men have been back to Prattsville numerous times a week to help their community. They shoveled several feet of mud out of many home basements, carried heavy furniture and appliances out of homes for families, removed waterlogged floors and rugs, and tore down damaged walls. Many helped repair machinery used in the effort – taking very few breaks – as they strove to restore the town. On Sunday, our clients and staff worked for five hours straight.
“When people in town see us, they recognize us, run up, hug all of us, and keep asking for us to return again”, said Debra Berrios, Supervisor and Counselor of Delaware County Center, “I am so proud that I witnessed the wonderful dedication from our residents, bless them all.”
For their amazing work, we salute our local heroes for their dedication and commitment to assisting their community. If you would like to help, click here for the Catskills Flood Relief Drive.
