Phoenix House AmeriCorps volunteers help Masbia at their soup kitchen

Phoenix House AmeriCorps volunteers recently spent two days of quality time working at Masbia, in Flatbush, Brooklyn and RegoPark, Queens during national AmeriCorps Week. Masbia, with three locations, is a strictly kosher and free soup kitchen/food pantry, with a mission to de-stigmatize, offering “free restaurant” services to their patrons. A take-home grocery package program is also available to families in the community. Masbia’s services are vital to many New York City area families as the current economy has caused increased needs for nutritious kosher food assistance.

Our AmeriCorps members worked dining areas during set-up, served clients as volunteer waiters, and helped with clean-up duties at the restaurants, in addition to performing hours of kitchen food prep (slicing and dicing vegetables, chicken, packaging food, cooking). The Masbia in Flatbush is also the location where all meal preparation takes place. We thank Masbia for this worthwhile experience to allow our volunteers to give back, and salute their dedication to the fight against hunger.
