Phoenix House Long Island drug rehab students at the annual polar bear plunge

Phoenix House Academy on Long Island students celebrated the first day of the New Year at chilly Wainscott Beach at the annual Polar Bear Plunge sponsored by the Seafood Shop. This icy start to the New Year is an easy challenge for these young men, once struggling with drug and substance abuse, as they embark on the road to treatment and recovery. After the plunge, all the participants gathered at the Seafood Shop for hot chowder, food and refreshments, with our students serving guests, helping out, and speaking to friends and fellow “Polar Bears” about Phoenix House.

Every year, our friends from the Seafood Shop donate proceeds from the event to Phoenix House Academy on Long Island in support of its life-saving programs. Since 1999, the Seafood Shop has continued this tradition, with the 1.6 mile jog from the shop to the beach. We are grateful to participate, treasure his friendship and generosity, and look forward to hitting the surf next winter. Happy New Year!

Phoenix House runs substance abuse treatment and prevention programs for adults and adolescents, including the Phoenix House Academy on Long Island, serving male teens struggling with drug and alcohol abuse, located in Wainscott. Our Academy model is designed to help young clients prepare for productive, self-sufficient, substance-free lives. Residents complete treatment while taking part in the Academy’s fully accredited on-site academic program, allowing them to catch up on their studies or earn credit towards their high school diplomas.
