Students of the Phoenix House Academy of Long Island hit the afternoon surf at Beach Lane in Wainscott for the annual New Year’s Day Polar Bear Splash. All fourteen young men took the plunge, including our Academy Director, Dan Boylan, with hundreds of other East Enders – led by the original “plungers”, our friends from The Seafood Shop. Since 1999, Colin has organized the 1.6 mile jog from The Seafood Shop to the beach for the icy dip; this year, Mother Nature blessed us with a day of sun and 50 degree temperatures, very uncommon for this event. Our students had an afternoon of fun and vigorous exercise to start the New Year on a brisk, healthy note – many thanks to Colin Mather for hosting this exuberant tradition and we look forward to hitting the beach again next winter! Happy New Year everybody!
