Phoenix House Academy of Long Island clients hit the surf to celebrate the first day of the New Year at an annual east end tradition – the 14th Annual Seafood Shop Polar Bear Plunge on Beach Lane in Wainscott. The ocean was COLD this year, last year’s dip was warmer in comparison…though didn’t stop our students and staff from diving in and spending time on the beach meeting fans and spectators! This brisk, bracing start to the New Year is an easy challenge for these young men, once struggling with drug and substance abuse, as they continue to move forward in 2013 with their treatment and recovery. This yearly winter ritual truly separates the spectators from the “Polar Bears,” as our guys gained future bragging rights for the day by participating in one of many healthy sports activities encouraged during their residential treatment stay.
Our friends from The Seafood Shop are the orginators of the “Plunge,” donating all proceeds from the event to Phoenix House Academy of Long Island in support of its life-saving programs. Since 1999, owner Colin Mather has organized the 1.6 mile jog from The Seafood Shop to the beach for the icy swim; we extend our heartfelt thanks to Colin for hosting this exuberant tradition, his generosity, and look forward to hitting the beach again next winter! Happy New Year to all!
Phoenix House runs substance abuse treatment and prevention programs for adults and adolescents, including the Phoenix House Academy of Long Island, serving male teens struggling with drug and alcohol abuse, located in East Hampton. Our Academy model is designed to help young clients prepare for productive, self-sufficient, substance-free lives. Residents complete treatment while taking part in the Academy’s fully accredited on-site academic program, allowing them to catch up on their studies or earn credit towards their high school diplomas.
