On Saturday, May 15, 2010, staff and clients from Phoenix House’s Community Residence at Riverside volunteered their time and skills with Hearts & Hammers to help rehabilitate the homes of senior and disabled homeowners in the Bronx. Hearts & Hammers provides free home improvement assistance to elderly homeowners so they may continue to live independently. Volunteers worked at various tasks, including cleaning out basements, painting, fixing fences and repairing broken plumbing. Several clients expressed a desire to help each month; feelings of accomplishment started to take the place of weary and tired muscles and the sometimes overpowering heat of the day.
