Happy Fourth of July at Phoenix House in California

Riding in the Fourth of July ParadeCelebrations of holidays are a vital part of substance abuse treatment and rehabilitation programs, especially at residential sites.  That’s why the staff and volunteers of Phoenix House California participated in a range of festivities to honor of the birth of our nation. The activities included: barbecue picnics for residents and their families, sports tournaments, potluck luncheons, outings to view public fireworks (where appropriate), and commemorative presentations that included speeches, poetry, song, and displays of artwork from the participants of the adult and adolescent programs. (Of course, we ruled out home-grown firework displays at our facilities: not recommended in drought-stricken California!)

Fourth of July Garden DecorationsWe love celebrations here at Phoenix House Academy in Lake View Terrace,” said Amy Spahr, the Academy’s Director of Mental Health Services. “It is important to keep teenagers active and happy, especially on holidays.” They spent their energy that day playing volleyball, with separate games for the girls (in the morning) and the boys (in the afternoon). The evening was busy, too: The teens and counselors went outside and watched the Hansen Dam Fireworks. On Sunday, all families and teens sampled an international array of dishes at the traditional Fourth of July potluck lunch.

The program of activities at Phoenix House Academy in Descanso in San Diego County was also packed with a barbecue, basketball tournament, Independence Day presentations, music, and family visits.

Adults at Phoenix House residential treatment programs in Venice and Orange County programs enjoyed similar festivities, with the clients in Venice having the advantage of being located on the Venice Boardwalk, at the edge of the Pacific. They had clear views of the magnificent firework displays in nearby Santa Monica and Marina Del Rey. At Santa Ana, there was music, festive food, and entertainment provided by clients and families for the enjoyment of all. The hard work of changing the worldviews, habits, thoughts, and behavior patterns of clients is all the more effective when it is accompanied by periods of rest and relaxation among family members and friendly faces.
