On November 10, 2011, during the 14th Meeting of the Minds Behavioral Health Conference in San Diego, Phoenix House San Diego’s Senior Director, Elizabeth’s Urquhart gave a presentation about Phoenix House Academy’s residential and non-residential programs. Her talk was included in a panel on “MHSA Prevention and Early Intervention Success Stories from San Diego County Programs” organized by Health Services Research Center at the University of California, San Diego. Ms. Urquhart spoke about Phoenix House’s comprehensive approach to treatment that starts with a focus on the distinct needs of every person. While seeking to address mental, physical, and social health, the agency uses a variety of evidence-based curricula, coupled with recreational and social activities, to ensure engagement of youth and their motivation for change. The PEI funding is used to enhance mental health services for teens at Carlsbad (outpatient program) and Descanso (residential program). The conference, entitled Strengthening Communities: Behavioral Health’s Role, was organized by Mental HealthAmerica ofSan DiegoCounty, the oldest consumer advocacy organization inSan Diego, dealing with all aspects of mental health and mental illness.
