Drug-Related Emergency During School Hours in Texas

Friday, September 12th, 2014

HOUSTON PICOne of the most consistent problems we see in our adolescent clients is the use and abuse of prescription pills. Everything from pain killers to anxiety medications and over-the-counter cough medicine are being used to alter the way our children feel. This is exactly what happened in a southwest Houston school on the morning of September 10 when 6 students decided to take unnamed pills from a fellow classmate and fell ill. Five of these six students needed to be Life Flighted to a local hospital, while one recovered at the school.

This incident highlights the severity of substance abuse problems among Texas students, in this case resorting to stealing from home and distributing unknown pills to their friends, ultimately leading to life threatening events for these 13 and 14 year olds.

Stories such as this are occurring more frequently in our schools and this is where Phoenix House Academies in Texas are here to help. We offer treatment for substance abuse in both residential and outpatient settings for teens aged 13 to 17 in Austin, Dallas, and Houston. With our master’s level clinicians and DISD/AISD accredited credit recovery built into our programming, we provide a safe environment for students to come and get the help that they need to succeed. Our programming recognizes that drug and alcohol use is not the only problem. We focus on family education, individual family counseling, and psychiatric evaluations throughout treatment. These aspects, along with the ability to continue with their education, allow teens to get back on track socially, emotionally, and academically.

Every day, Phoenix Houses Texas helps adolescents and adults who are suffering from addiction in Austin, Dallas, and Houston. Find out more about our programs and services, or call us today at: 888 671 9392.
