Phoenix Houses of Texas honored National Prevention Week by participating in the Dove Springs Health and Safety Awareness Fiesta on Saturday, May 4, 2013. The event took place at the William Cannon Community Health Center in Austin, Texas, and aimed to acquaint community members with the health programs and services that are available in their area.
Attendees of all ages enjoyed the accessible and educational festival as parents and teens alike learned prevention tools for a wide range of serious medical and mental health issues—from smoking to bullying to suicide. Participants included the Mendez Middle School Family Resource Center, Go Austin / Vamos Austin (GAVA), the William Cannon Advisory Board, and other community partners working to make a difference. Fun, healthy activities such as hula-hooping and a “What I Know About Tobacco” ball game got everyone moving, and kids received fun stickers and pencils with anti-drug messages to take home.
The Fiesta highlight was Congressman Lloyd Dogget’s speech; the Congressman, representing the 35th Congressional District of Texas, commended the remarkable impact of the William Cannon Advisory Committee and its progress in providing healthcare for uninsured and under-served individuals in need. Phoenix Houses of Texas is looking forward to continued partnership with Congressman Lloyd, the William Cannon Center, and all of our Austin area supporters as we work to create a brighter future for our community.
