Clients of Phoenix House Brentwood Campus‘ Mental Health programs are delighted to greet a special visitor, Harry the bullmastiff to their treatment facility. At 180 pounds, still a pup at just two years old, this gentle giant has become a very comforting mascot.
Harry’s appearances at the facility have become a highlight for our clients in treatment. Harry enjoys the opportunity to participate at groups by comforting clients, or simply visiting during a break in clinical activities. His calm and peaceful nature is an example to clients to be mindful in their recovery. Harry’s owner, Julia Floyd-Ventura, Vice President, Director of Mental Health and Military Services Programs of Phoenix House Brentwood Campus, definitely sees the difference Harry makes during a visit. As Harry gets out of her car and realizes he is in the parking lot of Phoenix House Brentwood Campus, he becomes very playful and excited; as they enter the building, he calmly switches to his gentle demeanor and is very obedient for the duration.
Clients are very eager to shower Harry with love and attention when he enters a room or they see him in the hallway. He patiently makes his way to every client, receiving kisses, hugs, and belly rubs as they offer their affection. Harry offers his paw to everyone he comes into contact with, especially those that are shy, allowing them to come out of their shell and bond with him. When a client offers a toy bone, he gently takes it from their hand, as opposed to a bit more puppy roughhousing at home with his family. Harry loves everyone equally, as well as the attention. Animal therapy improves clients’ morale and is an effective tool for expression and socialization. The Bullmastiff breed possesses great intelligence and a willingness to please, making them ideal pets and companions. This pedigree is successful in obedience, agility, tracking, and therapy work. Every visit from Harry is a treat for our clients and staff since he is so friendly and well-behaved.
