Phoenix Houses of Long Island safely weathered the storms of Hurricane Sandy

Phoenix Houses of New York staff and clients were well prepared in anticipation of Hurricane Sandy. As we all pay close attention to the local weather forecasts, our staffs plan ahead to ensure the safety and comfort of our clients in treatment. We are thankful to have ridden out the storm without any major damage.

After the storm passed, many towns on Long Island were without power. Clients from the Phoenix House Hauppauge Center Men’s Program were moved to the Phoenix House Brentwood Campus after the storm since the power was out at their location. They spent time with their brothers in recovery from the Brentwood Men’s Program, and were transferred back to Hauppauge the next morning when power was restored. Phoenix House Academy of Long Island lost power for only a few minutes, without falling trees or property damage. Phoenix House Lake Ronkonkoma Campus had no power losses, and storm debris and trees were cleared and disposed of quickly. The New York Region’s senior staff also traveled to our facilities the day after Sandy, touring the grounds to assess the aftermath and if there was any damage.

Our hearts go out to those brave souls residing in areas of New York, Long Island, and New Jersey awaiting restored power in their communities. We are grateful to be operating business as usual, without an interruption in clinical treatment and recovery services to the clients we serve.
