Celebration of Success at Phoenix House Academy in Los Angeles

Friday, November 12th, 2010

What a great way to kick off our first annual Phoenix House Academy of Los Angeles “Celebration of Success.” About 40 alumni and their families joined us for lunch on Saturday, October 23, 2010 at our facility in Lake View Terrace to share their pride of recovery.

Linnell Shapiro from The Brent Shapiro Foundation was an inspirational Keynote Speaker and received special recognition for her foundation’s work in preventing substance abuse among teens. Congressman Brad Sherman was recognized for his tireless efforts on behalf of those in need in our community. Phoenix House Academy music teacher John Morabito was recognized “with deep appreciation for his commitment and dedication while inspiring youth through music.”

Volunteers who were honored for their contributions included Don Griffin and Mark Spiwak of West LA Music who helped develop our in-house music studio; LAPD’s Senior Lead Officers Larry Martinez and Adriana Mungia, Officer Ester Vasquez and Sergeant John Walker who regularly wok with the youth in our program; Adriana Andrade for teaching Aztec dancing; Diane Namm for her role as a drama teacher; and Andrea Ochoa for volunteering on family days. Eric Heimbold was honored for teaching film arts, and Martine Ehrenclou for her creative writing workshops. Jorge Azpiazu and Valeria Rico from Lexicon Marketing were recognized for donating time and resources to create a Spanish-language PSA for broadcast on Spanish-language stations that was greatly appreciated during the event. It is only with the support of those dear friends in the community that we are able to do what we do!
