Ice cream sundaeOur new All-Stars Prevention and Education Group at Phoenix Houses of Texas kicked off on June 25 with an ice cream social. The All-Stars group focuses on enhancing young girls’ self-esteem and expression through the creative medium of fashion. The event helped newcomers sign up for All-Stars offerings while all participants enjoyed ice cream sundaes and informative group activities. “We love fashion!” exclaimed one young woman. Her friend agreed, adding that they were signing up for the All-Stars group because “it sounds like a lot of fun.”

Prevention specialist Cathy Runnels dubbed the initial meeting a success, remarking that “many of these girls plan to bring a friend to the group next week.” Runnels leads the All-Stars alongside co-facilitator Nensi Pembe. Both Runnels and Pembe welcome teens and ‘tweens from throughout the area to participate in the All-Stars; the girls look forward to building upon their artistic interest and honing their knowledge of fashion and creative textile arts.
