Addiction: A Family Issue

Thursday, June 20th, 2013

sad boyIt is estimated that six million American children live with at least one parent who abuses alcohol or other substances. When parents are struggling with addiction, the consequences are felt throughout their entire family, since they are often unable to function effectively in their parental roles. Aside from the obvious impairments caused by alcohol and drugs themselves, the focus on acquiring the substances can result in child neglect and in some cases may even lead to unlawful behaviors, such as dealing in or manufacturing drugs. Other consequences include diminished economic resources in the household, the possibility of legal issues, and estrangement from family.

The lack of positive parental guidance and support increases the chance for these children to experience a variety of problems, including poor physical health and emotional, social, and intellectual development problems. Studies have shown that children who grow up in a family environment where substance abuse is an issue have a greater risk of developing addiction problems themselves. Genetics plays a part as well, making children even more susceptible to the dangers of addiction. These factors make substance use not only an individual issue, but a problem that affects the whole family.

On the other hand, family plays a key role in helping troubled individuals to attain and sustain recovery from substance abuse, by providing support and encouragement while working together to reverse the damages of drugs and alcohol.  Phoenix House staff members work closely with family members to help them understand the important role they play in a loved one’s recovery.
