Phoenix House Career Academy clients attend weekly workshops with the Stella Adler Studio of Acting’s OutReach Division at our residential treatment facility in Brooklyn, training in voice, movement, and expression. This collective quickly bonded within the past six months; evolving into a super support team. The Studio’s Conservatory students help our clients explore their feelings, stretch the boundaries of creativity, and strengthen social skills. James, a resident student actor and recipient of a scholarship to the Stella Adler Studio of Acting, shares his views about the workshops helping his personal recovery:
“I truly appreciate the blessings as a member of the ensemble. As months passed, our weekly workshops helped reorganize my chain of thought to better focus on sustaining my recovery – I can really feel it. Personally, I’ve grown; no longer withdrawn, I have totally come out of my shell. I found new feelings, enhanced creativity and a new sense of emotional comfort without being under the influence of any substance. Performing helps me escape and clear my mind. I possess stronger decision making skills and developed a deeper inner thought process – living by choice, not by change. It’s amazing to have the conservatory students here to spend time and show support – it’s a huge support team, helping us build new relationship skills we never had. I’m hopeful and healthy going through recovery – it brings me joy; I’m not being judged by anyone as I explore my feelings and express myself. I’m really enjoying the ride.”
We are proud of James and all participants at our Phoenix House Career Academy; we look forward to more new original theater works from this enthusiastic group, in partnership with the Stella Adler Studio.
