According to a survey by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, 17% of American high school students drink, smoke or use drugs during the school day and 60 percent of students report that their schools are “drug-infected.” Of the 1,000 kids surveyed, 86 percent say they know students who are abusing substances and most say drugs are easy to obtain. A majority (60 percent) say drugs are available on campus, and almost half know someone who sells drugs at school. The drug problem is getting worse in private schools, students report. The number of private school students calling their schools “drug-infected” jumped from 36 percent in 2011 to 54 percent in 2012—the first time a majority of private schools were reported to be infected with drugs.
