This Friday on Good Morning America, ABC news anchor Elizabeth Vargas spoke of her struggle with alcoholism and how she got help. Elizabeth, an award-winning journalist who anchors “20/20,” said her children called her wine “mommy’s juice,” and her husband told her she had a drinking problem. She responded with anger, tried unsuccessfully to limit her intake, and eventually realized she was an alcoholic. When she showed up for work one day in no shape to do her interview, she knew she needed help.
“I am an alcoholic,” Vargas told fellow ABC anchor George Stephanopoulos. “It took me a long time to admit that to myself. It took me a long time to admit it to my family, but I am.” Vargas called her alcoholism exhausting and a “staggering burden.” Vargas went to rehab last fall, is in Alcoholics Anonymous, and has a sponsor. “There’s been a real spiritual component for me in all of this,” she said. “Reach out to somebody who can talk you through that rotten day.”
