Family involvement is an integral component in the treatment process. Individual family sessions, multifamily group therapy sessions, and parent and significant other education groups are offered as part of each client’s individualized treatment plan. Phoenix House invites families to special informational and educational sessions, provides them with appropriate printed resources in English or Spanish, (including a Parents’ Handbook), and ensures that they understand the important role they play in their loved one’s recovery. In addition to in-person visitation, families can contact their loved ones via Skype video service.

Frequent communication and participation is highly encouraged, and family members are urged to participate in a weekly group as well as in family counseling. In our Academy’s residential setting, telephone contact between the clients and their families is not restricted unless it becomes a distraction. Visitation is conducted weekly, and our program has a dedicated family therapist who facilitates family participation in treatment. For added convenience, family meetings may be scheduled at our Providence Outpatient Center.

Phoenix House expects that families will be involved to the fullest extent possible, including family visitation, attendance at family therapy sessions (in person or by telephone), and involvement in meetings to plan for discharge. If the client is under 18, parents or other caregivers will receive regular updates from program staff, will be invited to family meetings, and will be included in treatment planning decisions. If the client is 18 or older, updates and involvement will be in keeping with the wishes of the client, but full family involvement in the program will be recommended. Family members are also given staff contact numbers in the event that there is an urgent need to get in touch with the client. Family members and other concerned persons are also invited to attend a free Concerned Persons educational session (held one evening a week), so they can effectively support the long-term recovery of their loved one.

All of our outpatient programs include one family session per week. We may also recommend programs or classes for the entire family to help support the client’s continued recovery once they return home.
