Whitney’s “Call to Arms”

Whitney Houston’s tragic death should not be used as a political tool, nor a call for drug legalization—but it should serve as what Jamie Lee Curtis recently called “a call to arms to face addiction and alcoholism head-on.” We as a nation need to change our perception of addiction and the misconception that it’s problem belonging only to two ends of our country’s socio-economic spectrum: poverty and celebrity. In reality, the problem of addiction belongs to all of us.

Addiction: Not a Laughing Matter

It’s unfortunate that Dr. Drew, who has a national forum, would invite guests like comedian Carolla to join him on the air—guests who are undoubtedly going to joke about substance abuse, and then would laugh right along with him. He knows that addiction is a chronic health condition, not unlike diabetes or heart disease. No one would joke about someone having diabetic crises or a heart attack. Likewise, it’s not a joke when someone has a new acute episode with substance abuse problems.

Treatment: Because No Life is Disposable

In his State of the State address last week, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie surprised many by outlining his plans to mandate treatment for non-violent drug offenders. “No life is disposable…every one of God’s creations can be redeemed,” Christie declared, to applause from Republicans and Democrats alike. “Everyone deserves a second chance.”
