Addiction Among Baby Boomers is…Booming

Phoenix House Chief Clinical Officer Deni Carise appeared on CBS News to discuss the recent increase in drug abuse among older Americans. Five percent of our nation’s 78 million baby boomers admit to abusing drugs, and the number of individuals over 50 who seek substance abuse treatment is rising. There are multiple possible motivating factors for this turn (or return) to drug use later in life, including stress, loneliness, history of drug abuse, and the normal physical symptoms of aging. There is, however, good news—since more older Americans are getting the help they need, more are overcoming their addictions and living full, active lives in recovery.
