Students of Phoenix House Academy on Long Island hit the surf to celebrate the New Year at Wainscott Beach at the annual Polar Bear Plunge sponsored by The Seafood Shop. With over 500 spectators on the beach and 100 brave plungers poised to jump in after the warm-up jog from the shop to the beach, our clients were in good company at one of the largest turnouts in the event’s history.
The brisk, chilly surf proved to be an easy challenge for these young men on the road to recovery. After the plunge, participants gathered at The Seafood Shop for hot chowder, cocoa, and other warm refreshments, with our students helping out and speaking to friends and fellow plungers about Phoenix House.
Since its inception in 1999, our friends from The Seafood Shop donate the proceeds from the event to Phoenix House Academy on Long Island in support of its life-saving programs. We are grateful to Colin Mather, owner of The Seafood Shop for his friendship and generosity, and look forward to hitting the surf next winter. Happy New Year!
