Phoenix House celebrates the National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month in September. There are events planned and under way throughout the California region, including the following events in Los Angeles.

Teens enrolled in the residential treatment program at Phoenix House Academy of Los Angeles have had a very busy month, with highlights outlined below.

The 6th Annual Phoenix House Recovery Month Celebration at Phoenix House Academy of Los Angeles took place on Friday, the 16th of September, 2011 at Lake View Terrace, CA. This event concluded a month-long project and featured an awards ceremony for a poster-making competition by teams of young men and women who are residents of the program. The teens also made poster-boards and prepared presentations about their community service projects. Other attractions included guest speakers from partner agencies, and a raffle.

Community involvement is a required part of treatment at Phoenix House, emphasizing charitable attitude, compassion, and generosity. The teens’ presentations about organizations that they helped and lessons they learned were adjudicated by guests from the community. One group spent a day pulling weeds out of the walkways in a wild-life sanctuary, to ensure that the rattlesnakes have nowhere to hide. Another group helped the Tree People plant trees on a school campus; still another worked in an animal shelter. One team of girls packed care packages for our troops: first they held a fundraiser at Phoenix House, then they purchased and obtained gifts, and then spent time putting the packages together – with personal care items, magazines, books, and non-perishable food items. Their poster and presentation also had a patriotic theme. Other students worked in a garden, or on graffiti removal. All learned lessons about commitment, friendship, and recovery…

The winners of the Banner Competition included: Best Presentation – Mavericks Boys Team, Best Community Service Project – Mariposa Girls Team, Best Banner – Serenity Girls Team, Best Overall – Harmony Girls Team.

On the 22nd of September 2011, representatives from Homeboy Industries came to address the Phoenix House Academy residents and staff, talking about issues of gang and violence prevention, reintegration to society after involvement with criminal justice system, and recovery from addiction and criminal life style.

On the 27th of September Phoenix House will participate in the Prevention and Recovery Month Rally. There will be a Phoenix House information booth and clients with staff will represent the agency by taking part in the full range of informative and inspirational activities.

At the beginning of September, teens enrolled in the Phoenix Rising Music Program finally completed the Phoenix House Recovery Song, which will be our agency’s “anthem.” Under the dedicated direction of Music Program’s Director, John Morabito, teens wrote words, music and recorded a song that expresses their feelings and concerns using styles of music they and other youth can easily relate to.
