As many children around the United States were headed back to school this past month, Phoenix House Mid-Atlantic started helping some local schools get ready for the new academic year.
Last month, we exhibited at the annual Back-to-School In-Service Meeting at Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax. We showed school counselors and administrators all the resources we offer to help individuals and their families struggling with addiction.
On August 22, Pattie Schneeman, Clinical Director at Phoenix House Mid-Atlantic, held a training session for school social workers and counselors at Loudoun County public schools. The topic covered in the three-hour training session was “Current Adolescent Substance Use Trends and Motivational Interviewing” and about fifty school counseling professionals participated.
“Education is important for everyone,” Pattie Schneeman, Clinical Director at Phoenix House Mid-Atlantic said. “It is imperative that people who work with students be aware of what is going on in the young persons’ world and be comfortable enough to help kids make good choices.”
On October 1st William Prasad, LPC, Clinical Supervisor at Phoenix Houses of the Mid-Atlantic, will make a presentation at the Leis Center in Falls Church, Virginia. Prasad will talk to an audience composed primarily of middle and high-school counselors. Topics covered in the presentation will include an overview of substance abuse treatment and guidelines for counseling professionals to support students and families affected by substance abuse.
At Phoenix House Mid-Atlantic we strongly believe that a supportive community for schools is vital to building an environment where children can thrive academically, socially and emotionally. Phoenix House counselors will continue to provide area schools with our widely-recognized expertise in the field of substance abuse throughout the new school year.
“The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows,” Sidney J. Harris wrote. At Phoenix House Mid-Atlantic we are working hard to open windows for our youth into the dangerous realities of substance abuse and the hope that comes from its prevention and treatment.
