Yankees Game

On a beautiful September evening clients and staff members of Phoenix House Florida were given an exciting treat. Adolescents from the Derek Jeter Center in Tampa and the Brandon Outpatient Center, along with adults from Phoenix House Citra Center’s residential program, all joined together to attend Game Two between the New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays.

This exciting event was sponsored by Turn 2 Foundation, an organization founded by Yankees legend Derek Jeter in 1996.The mission of Turn 2 is “to create and support signature programs and activities that motivate young people to turn away from drugs and alcohol and ‘TURN 2′ healthy lifestyles.” Turn 2 has been a sponsor of Phoenix House’s Derek Jeter Center for more than five years. It is an honor for Phoenix House Florida to be one of the many programs sponsored by Turn 2, which helps us to make such a positive impact on the youngsters of the Tampa Bay community.

But more than just watching the game, the evening was a chance to pay respects to one of baseball’s most renowned players, Derek Jeter. The game at Tropicana Field marked one of the last few games Derek Jeter would play before his retirement and the triumphant conclusion of a 20-year career spent entirely with the Yankees. The game could not have been more exciting: in the bottom of the eighth inning, the two teams were tied 2-2, and the tension could be felt throughout the stadium. As Jeter stepped up to the plate, the Phoenix House adolescents stood up in support, signs raised high for him. Jeter landed a strategic hit, and the ball flew between first and second base. This game-changing play helped secure a win for the Yankees over the Rays with a final score of 3-2, and provided an unforgettable experience for Jeter’s Phoenix House team.
