We are proud to congratulate Ms. Florence Avognon, teacher at the Phoenix House Academy of Los Angeles’s high school program operated by the Los Angeles County Office of Education. She has recently been named by the State Department of Education as one of California’s 2012 Teachers of the Year. State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Torlakson said: “Ms. Avognon says teachers are simply partners for a better tomorrow. Such passionate, skilled, and dynamic teachers are able to take troubled and struggling young people and direct them to a brighter tomorrow, a more promising future.” The award ceremony is scheduled for February 2012.
Ms. Avognon has 18 years of teaching experience and spent nine years teaching English, reading, and history at the Central Juvenile Hall, a detention facility for students going through the court system. She joined the faculty at the Phoenix House Academy this fall. We are lucky to have her! Ms. Avognon is the second teacher at the Phoenix House Academy who received such a prestigious honor. In 2009, Phoenix House Academy teacher, Mr. Scott Aalund was recognized as one of Los Angeles County’s Teachers of the School Year 2009-2010. The contribution of such gifted, dedicated and effective teachers greatly increases the effectiveness of our evidence-based treatment program. We are grateful for their presence and their talents.
