On Tuesday, March 15, 2011, Phoenix Houses of Florida presented its fourth annual Humanitarian of the Year Award Luncheon, a farewell tribute to the Honorable Pam Iorio, Mayor of Tampa. More than 200 guests attended the event, which celebrated this beloved public figure’s outstanding leadership and contributions to the community as she neared the end of her second and final term in office.
Chaired by Raymond E. Murray and his wife, Nancy, along with their son, R. Michael Murray and his wife, Joy, the 2011 Humanitarian of the Year Award Luncheon was hosted by news anchor John Wilson of Fox 13, WTVT, serving as Master of Ceremonies. Steve Otto, columnist at The Tampa Tribune, was among the speakers paying tribute to Mayor Iorio. Major sponsors of the event, which raised more than $50,000 in support of the substance abuse treatment programs and services Phoenix House provides throughout the region, included Ray and Nancy Murray, SunTrust, John and Susan Sykes, Carlton Fields PA, McNichols Co., Michael and Joy Murray, the Oliva Tobacco Company, and Sykes Enterprises Incorporated.
Previous recipients of the Humanitarian of the Year Award include the Right Reverend Monsignor Laurence E. Higgins, Frederick E. Fisher and Whitfield Palmer, and Raymond E. Murray.
