Collaboration is a key to success! At Phoenix Houses of California we are extremely happy with the outcome of our First Annual Holiday Networking Luncheon organized in collaboration with the Betty Ford Center and held on December 3, 2012 at the California Endowment in Los Angeles. Dr. Charles Sophy (Medical Director of Department of Children and Family Services in Los Angeles County) gave a lecture on “Impact of Addiction on Adults and Adolescents” and over 50 representatives of local treatment providers, and other substance abuse specialists have attended the training and the elegant luncheon. Our guests were also introduced to the continuum of care at Betty Ford and at Phoenix House.
Betty Ford Center
The non-profit Betty Ford Center is a licensed addiction treatment hospital in Rancho Mirage, California. We treat addiction to alcohol and/or other drugs as a primary disease that affects the entire family system, including patients, children, spouses, parents, and friends. We are devoted to helping people addicted to alcohol and/or other drugs begin the journey to a new life. The Betty Ford Center provides gender-specific treatment in a safe, secure and inspiring environment. We have a comprehensive continuum of care, enabling us to provide individualized care for each patient. Specialized treatment programs are available for women, licensed professionals, relapses, older adults, younger adults and patients with chronic pain.
Dr. Charles Sophy
Dr. Charles Sophy has dedicated his life to the physical and mental well-being of children and families from all walks of life. As the Medical Director for the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS)–the largest Child Welfare System in the United States–Dr. Sophy is responsible for directing the physical and mental health, as well as ensuring the safety, of over 40,000 foster care children. But protecting and caring for our nation’s most vulnerable children is only part of his story… In his private practice in Los Angeles, Dr. Sophy protects and cares for the nation’s most privileged children. And it is his range and scope of patients that set Dr. Sophy apart from any other psychiatrist or medical professional in the media today. And regardless of the socio-economic status of the individual or family he treats, Dr. Sophy maintains his simple yet powerful philosophy: “Parenting begins with you. Not your child. You. And you owe it to your child to be the best possible you.”
In 2010, Dr. Sophy released his first book entitled Side By Side The Revolutionary Mother-Daughter Conflict Resolution Book by Harper-Collins Publishing. Dr. Sophy has made many guest appearances on television and radio including “Larry King Live”, “The Today Show”, “Anderson Cooper 360” PBS’ “A Place Of Our Own” and “Dr. Drew LIVE”. He has been quoted in The LA Times, The Washington Post, USA Today and The Chicago Tribune, and he has been both interviewed and published in major magazines, including Parents, Men’s Health, Family Circle and Redbook. His presence on the internet has grown rapidly through his website www.drsophy.com, where you can also enjoy his weekly podcasts covering a very interesting and broad range of topics with weekly guests to further enhance the discussion.
