Recovery is something to celebrate every day, and Phoenix House Citra Center recently held a very special celebration for women who have completed the residential treatment program and embarked on healthy new lives in recovery.
Sunday, May 19, proved a perfect day for a picnic on the lush Citra Center grounds, with clear skies, brilliant sun, and perfect temperatures. The returning completers each received a bright red T-shirt with “Alumni” emblazoned on the back, and they took part in a fiercely contested but good-humored volleyball match against current residents. While the winners of the game were never determined, everyone was having too much fun to care.
Citra residents played chef, manning the barbecue grill and turning out trays of hamburgers, hot dogs, and all the extras that make a cookout special. Conversation flowed freely as alums shared their stories of struggle, hope, and the rewards of sustaining recovery. Not the least inspiring were the many stories of mothers reunited with the children and families they had nearly lost through substance abuse. Passing on these hard-learned lessons might be the greatest gift the alumnae could give to women now in treatment.
