The number of people on Long Island seeking help for prescription painkiller addiction has spiked in recent years, rising 36% since 2007. Due to the physical dependence produced by chronic use of opioid painkillers, teens who are prescribed pain killer medications need to be monitored from the moment they start to take medicine, to the moment they stop using the drug in order to reduce or avoid withdrawal symptoms.
