On Saturday, September 12, 2009, nearly 1,500 Phoenix House clients, alumni, and staff members turned out for the second annual A&E Recovery Rally. Undaunted by the threat of rain, the group, donning hats and t-shirts with the new Phoenix House “wings of hope” logo, marched from Foley Square in lower Manhattan, across the Brooklyn Bridge, and into Cadman Plaza Park to celebrate National Recovery Month. New York Governor David Paterson, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, and OASAS Commissioner Karen Carpenter-Palumbo were among the luminaries who addressed the crowd of 10,000. CNN anchor Jane Velez-Mitchell shared her own recovery journey and Motown legend Smokey Robinson brought the house down with a special concert.
