Driver Intervention

Phoenix Driver Intervention

Phoenix Driver Intervention (PDI) is a program of education and counseling for Connecticut drivers with arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. There are four parts to the driver intervention, consisting of an initial evaluation and a three-part program of education and counseling. This course meets the requirements of Connecticut State Law and the Department of Motor Vehicles.

The first phase of the program is a single session taking place over one weekend, from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon. This session is held at the convenient and accessible Econo Lodge Inn & Suites in Windsor Locks. Up to fifteen participants will meet with a licensed counselor to explore their use of alcohol and other drugs and related risk behavior. The group remains at the hotel throughout the weekend.

After completion of the weekend session, participants attend one two and one half hour group session per week, for eight weeks. During the weekly session, a licensed counselor helps them learn to change harmful substance use and other risky behavior and then maintain the changes. The weekly sessions are held in Windsor Locks.

Once the eight sessions are completed, four follow-up sessions are required over a one year period. A certificate of completion is provided upon successful completion of all phases of the program.

Failure to complete all sessions can prevent reinstatement of driver’s license.

Alcohol and drug testing and self-help group attendance are required in all program phases.

Admission Process:

The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles will send instructions to offenders, who may contact PDI for assistance by phone or by email.

Each participant should first contact PDI, by phone or email, to set up an evaluation with one of our Certified Substance Abuse Counselors.

Payment Methods:

The total cost of the program is $825, which includes hotel lodging, meals during the weekend retreat, and all of the programming services.  Participants may choose to either pay in full or take advantage of our payment plan.  With either payment option, a $100 non-refundable deposit is required within two weeks of enrollment over the phone or two weeks prior to the weekend retreat (whichever comes first).

The payment plan starts out with the $100 non-refundable deposit.  Then, upon arrival at the weekend retreat, participants must bring two payments with them.  One is payable to the Econo Lodge for the amount of $140 (because you are paying for your room directly), and the other payment is to Phoenix Driver Intervention for the amount of $100.  During Phase II, for 7 of the 8 weekly groups, participants would be required to bring $60 payments each week, then on the final Phase II class ( week 8 ) there would be a final payment of $65.  All fees can be paid by bank check or money order made payable to “Phoenix Driver Intervention” or by Credit Card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover).

    • What's an intervention?

When people engage in self-destructive behavior, they often don't realize that they need help. An intervention is when family members or friends confront a loved one about his or her addiction, express their concern, and offer suggestions about how and where to get help.
